5. Post import activities: reconnecting data sources

Please consider the following information about the migration of your Power BI solutions to the nhs.net environment.

Reconnecting data sources

Please remember that whilst you can start your Power BI migration journey as soon as possible, not all data sources will be available in the nhs.net environment. If your dashboard or report utilises data stored within your legacy OneDrive, Teams or SharePoint, you will need to wait until the switchover is completed to complete your Power Platform migration activities.

For more information about timelines, please consult the transition overview and timelines article.

Updating data sources – Power BI Desktop

  • Step 1: Open your Power BI Desktop file from your laptop or desktop. Ensure you have logged to the report using your nhs.net account in the top-left corner. Otherwise, select ‘Sign in with a different account’ and follow the steps to login to your nhs.net account.
  • Step 2: Select ‘File’ in the top pane.
  • Step 3: Select ‘Options and settings’, then ‘Data source settings’.
  • Step 4: Select the data source that needs updating, then select ‘Change Source…’.
  • Step 5: The example below shows how to replace the data source for an Excel connection. Replace the old URL of the data source (likely connecting to the legacy environment) with the new nhs.net URL for your data source. Select ‘OK’.
  • Step 6: Repeat these steps for all reports and data sources required.

Updating dataflows – Power BI Service

  • Step 2: Select the desired workspace (personal/shared).
  • Step 3: Select ‘New’, then ‘Dataflow’.
  • Step 5: Select the previously saved .json file to import it into the selected workspace in the nhs.net environment.
  • Step 6: Repeat these steps for all workspaces and dataflows required.
